Enyel – to continue our discussion on Gossip Girl – this is my eval of GG now and what I would like to see on the upcoming season:

I think Nate’s character is really reductive – defined in terms of his relationships to others rather than posited as an actual self.

Chuck Bass is much more commanding – the layers of “personality”, the Oscar Wildean dandyism/flamboyance, the manipulative evil of a gothic figure, lend themselves to study and intrigue. (Plus, they are a sign of a trenchant, intelligent mind.)

Dan has great potential as a character – I could do so much with Dan (but then my characters would have depth, which would contradict the notion of spoiled “shallow” rich kids.) I envision a starving English major Dan internalizing an existential struggle (all poets, writers suffer – its inscribed in the creative mind) and turning to alcohol to sooth his angst. He wanders the streets late at night, drunk, gazing up at the sky and wondering if there is a God, wondering why he was put on earth, wondering why no matter how hard he tries he feels alienated from his friends – he writes some great poetry inspired by this phenomenally beautiful girl he fears to approach. The difficulty in representing this interiority would be the same as with Hamlet – but Hamlet is Shakespeare’s most commanding figure – he haunts us even today, so if it is done well it’s a done deal – eternal.

I would expand Nate’s current tendencies, and by doing so, open up his character to multiplicity. I’d have him go the “Chace” route but magnify it 1000 times. Nate joins the Fraternity. He’s hot stuff, man. Girls want him; guys want to be him – that all culminates in Greek living. The Big Narcissistic Ego on campus. (Vomitus Eruptus) But narcissists are never happy because behind that false ego/false front is somebody who desperately needs love and approval, and they die if they don’t get it.

Cut to scene of Nate in art class. Nate’s a fantastic artist, but of course, he has to hide it because everyone knows art is for faggots and his jock friends will make fun of him if they caught him drawing. He is in awe/has a crush on a fellow art student – a poor girl on a full scholarship, extremely bright and talented. Of course, his Greek friends would never approve and his sorority girlfriend would be pissed, but through this girl (I’m thinking Hegel’s dialectic – we transcend ourselves through others) we begin to see another side to him. For once Nate is at a loss for words – she’s real, and he doesn’t know how to deal with real people – only big phonies. But slowly, by befriending her, Nate starts to grow – and a new soul is born under the stars of her love.

But this will never happen because TV is the vehicle for mind-numbing stupidity.

He looks great..This new hairdo makes him look youngerish and fresher..lol

@ Countess: I really think you should go and write GG, you’re a zillion times better than the writers xD I would love to see a deeper Nate, I love tortured soul Nate, but he stops being like that whenever he has a new girl in front of him, I wish that could stop already, is so boring seeing him on and off with everyone in the show, I don’t know if the writers are too bored to write better storylines or what, but the show used to be better
